Welcome to the memorial page for

James Kevin O'Rourke

July 22, 2015

James Kevin O'Rourke, 65, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, July 22, in his Hull home. Jim was born in Boston, December 30, 1949, the fifth and youngest child of the late Patrick and Rita (Malcolm) O'Rourke. He was raised In Jamaica Plain, graduated from Boston English High School and attended University of Kentucky. Jim retired from Stop & Shop after many years as a deli manager in various Boston locations. He was a kind and generous friend, always ready to lend a hand or an ear, or offer support and encouragement in his quiet, good-humored way. He was a devoted friend of Bill W. for some 32 years. He loved, in no particular order, the Grateful Dead, Aruba, reading, cribbage, cards, coffee, cigarettes and everything ocean. Jim so enjoyed being a short walk from the water and maintained a deep tan most of the year. He could actually float on his back, with his ankles crossed, for an hour or more at a time, sometimes falling asleep on the water to the consternation of lifeguards. Jim's daughter, Mary Kay, and sister, Carol Dunlap, predeceased him. He is survived by Patricia (Hicks) O'Rourke, his wife of 30 years; brothers, Larry and his wife Marie, Bill and his wife Ellie, all of Framingham, and Jack of California; and stepchildren, Jennifer Savage, Marcy Eaton and David Edge. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and an assortment of fond brothers and sisters-in-law. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral Mass for Jim at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, at St. Ann's Church, 208 Samoset Ave., Hull. There will be no visiting hours and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Salvation Army or to Father Bill's & Mainspring, 422 Washington St., Quincy MA 02169.
