Joseph Riordan Carty

Joseph “Joe” Riordan Carty, 80, resident of Norwell and Eastham, MA died suddenly while out for a swim in his beloved Cape Cod Bay on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. He is survived by Grace (McLaughlin), his wife of 55 years, brother Gerard Carty of Westwood, sister Catherine Carty and her husband Tom Wilbur of Freeport, ME, and children Timothy Carty and Cindy Davis of Duxbury, Colleen and Timothy Moran of Reading, Libby and Bernard McNamee of Midlothian, Virginia, Deirdre and Steven Forss of Charlestown, and Andrew and Suzanne Carty of Milton. Joe took great pride in his grandchildren Samuel McNamee, Liam Carty and Rose Moran and his cat Louie.

Joe is a Naval veteran, a graduate of Roxbury’s Mission High School and of Boston College. Joe felt honored to attend Boston College and served as President of the Class of ’60 until his death. He was the Commencement Grand Marshall for both his 25th and 50th reunion years.

 

Joe owned Murphy/Carty Insurance in Scituate Harbor and retired after 30 years. He truly enjoyed lending assistance and advice to his clients and being a part of the Scituate business community. 

 

In addition, Joe was quite involved his home community of Norwell where he served in a multitude of ways: Capital Budget Committee member and chair, Advisory Board member and chair, Historical Commission member and chair, Historical Society member and president, the town’s Centennial Committee, the 1976 Bicentennial Committee, the Antique Fire Association, the Board of Registrars, the Community Preservation Commission, the Roosters, the Norwell Joggers Group, and the Dunkin’ Donuts Roundtable. 

 

Since 1963, Joe was a member of the Tri-Town Rotary where he received the Paul Harris Award, Rotary’s highest honor.

 

Joe lived his Catholic faith daily and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s of the Nativity of Scituate and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society.

 

Joe’s favorite activities aside from spending time with family included eating ice cream, exercising, “resting his eyes” on the couch, tinkering around the house and yard, discussing politics, and swimming at high tide.

 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at 11 am in St. Mary of the Nativity, 1 Kent St., Scituate Harbor. Visiting hours Monday, July 25, 2016 from 4-8 pm in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 160 So. Main St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset, MA. 02025. Interment St. Mary Cemetery, Scituate. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297-0303.
