Welcome to the memorial page for

Robert E. Bennett

August 16, 2011
Robert E. Bennett, a man of exceptional character, loyalty, warmth, humor and intelligence, died of cancer on August 16, 2011 in the company of his loving family at home in Norwell, Massachusetts.  He was 50. Bob truly excelled in everything he set his heart, mind and hand to.

Born in Morristown, New Jersey, Bob attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he distinguished himself both academically and in athletics, garnering national recognition as an All-American lacrosse goalie.  He went on to Princeton University, graduating in 1982.  There he was elected to serve as president of Ivy Club, one of the university's historic clubs.  Bob graduated from Harvard Business School in 1986, earning the prestigious honor of Baker Scholar in recognition of academic achievement.

A highly respected, highly accomplished businessman, Bob excelled at two of America's iconic firms.  His early career was at Goldman, Sachs, where he spent a total of 9 years, specializing in real estate investment banking.  He spent the rest of his career at Berkshire Hathaway, taking on a wide range of responsibilities over 17 highly fulfilling years, and rising to the level of Senior Vice President.  He served as a valued member of the Gastrointestinal Visiting Committee at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

An adoring husband of 18 years to his wife Julie, and a wonderful father to his sons Jake and Drew, he drew his greatest joy from their endeavors, especially on the hockey rink and baseball diamond.  Bob's special combination of integrity, warm-heartedness, and good humor were magnetic; wherever he went, from Exeter, to Princeton to Harvard to Wall Street to the playing fields of Norwell, Bob made friends that invariably became lifelong, truly cherished members of his family.

He is survived by his loving wife Julie, sons Jake and Drew, sister Catherine and her husband Fred Frailey, sister Betsy and her husband Bill Henkel, brother Jeff and his wife Kelsey, sister-in-law Constance and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend the memorial service celebrating Bob's life to be held on Thursday, September 8 at 3:00PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 59 Court Street, Dedham, MA 02026.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's memory to the Bennett/Wallace Family Scholarship Fund at Noble and Greenough School, 10 Campus Drive, Dedham, MA 02026 or The Bennett Family Fund for Targeted Therapies at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA 02445.
