Wilbur “Bill” L. Garside, formerly of Green Valley, AZ and Norwell, MA passed away on March 26 at the Wentworth Senior Living, Portsmouth NH.  Bill was the beloved husband of the late Jeanne (Guckavan) Garside.  Devoted father of Matthew and wife Janet, Michael and wife Jean, Molly and husband Bill McQuillen, and the late Joseph Garside. Grandfather of Marshall Garside, Ryan Garside, Liam and Brendan McQuillen.  Brother of Elaine Sedani, Maureen Jillson and Frank Garside, and the late Robert Garside and James Garside. 

 

Prior to joining the US Navy Seabees during the Korean Conflict, Bill was the coxswain of a team from the Union Boat Club based in Boston that competed in the Olympic trials for paired oared shells with coxswain at Princeton 1948.  He spent his career as an architect working for Ganteaume & McMullen, Anderson & Garside Associates and Wilson/Garside.  He had the opportunity to work on many amazing projects during his career including Great Point Lighthouse on Nantucket.

 

Bill was an avid sailor, supporter of the Cardinal Cushing Center in Hanover and the Carmelite Monastery in Boston.  He was the past president of the Norwell Historical Society, past member of the Norwell ZBA, Commodore of the Cross Street Regatta, co-recipient of the Norwell Citizen of the Year award with his wife Jeanne, recipient of the Silver Beaver Award from the Old Colony Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of the Green Valley VFW.

 

Family and Friends will gather to celebrate Bill on Monday, April 3, 2017 from 9-10:30 am in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central Street (off Rt. 123, near State Police Barracks), Norwell Center, MA. 02061 followed immediately by a funeral Mass in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate Harbor at 11 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Carmelite Monastery 61 Mt Pleasant Ave, Roxbury, MA 02119.
