David J. Hines, 88, of Scituate passed peacefully on January 10, 2019. Born in Somerville, MA on September 13, 1930.  Son of John J Hynes and Marie (O’Connor) Hynes of Doolin, County Claire, Ireland.

Survived by his son Stephen and his wife Debra (Cammer) Hines of Cohasset, MA and his grandchildren Kate, Matthew and Griffin Hines who lovingly called him Umpa.  He is also survived by his brother, Donald P Hines of Pensacola Florida. Also survived by former spouse and friend Jean Hines Burke of Plymouth, MA. Preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marie Hines Johnstone.

He graduated from St John’s High School, North Cambridge MA in 1948; Boston University with a BS in Business as well as an MS in Communications; and Boston College with Doctor of Educational Administration.   He was a High School teacher in Winthrop, MA, a school administrator in Scituate MA, and the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Weymouth, MA for nearly 20 years.

He entered the US Air Force in 1950 and served in Japan and Korea during the Korean War as a Radar Specialist.  An active member of the Scituate community for over 50 years, he served on the Scituate Board of Library Trustees, the Scituate Advisory Committee, and the Capital Planning Committee.  He was a member of the Scituate Town Scholarship Committee for 22 years. He could always be found volunteering at Town Meetings, local elections, and the Scituate carnival.

He was a long-time member of the Scituate Knights of Columbus, the Scituate Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Post 3169), and the Cohasset American Legion (George Mealy Post).

A man of simple tastes and pleasures he took one day at a time and he accomplished what he wanted to accomplish in a quiet, dignified way.  He will be missed.

The family would like to thank South Shore Hospital / Dana Farber, The Norwell VNA, and Harbor House Rehabilitation for the compassion and care they showed him during his short illness.
