James Roy White

James Roy White, age 94, passed away on August 8 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Dene (Hudgins) White, two daughters  Jennifer Smollett and her husband, Peter; Cynthia Vogel and her husband Robert (all of Scituate) and his son David White and his partner, Christine Comperchio of Ipswich. He leaves six grandchildren, Andrew Smollett, Julie Chandler and her husband, Scot, Robert Vogel, James White, Jeffrey White and Natalie White and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Smollett, Kaelen Chandler and Elizabeth Chandler. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Mancuso of Florida, several nieces and nephews, and predeceased by his brother, John Francis Lynch.

 Born in Boston, Jim was a graduate of Boston University and earned a Master’s degree from Rutgers University.  He is a U. S. Army veteran of World War 2, having served as PFC Rifleman in both the European Theater Campaign and the Pacific Theater Campaign.  He was awarded five battle stars.

Upon returning from the war, he married the love of his life and began his successful, life-long career in banking.  Beginning as a teller at the Shawmut Bank of Boston, he climbed the corporate ladder to become Senior Vice President before moving on to become President of Brookline Trust Company where he retired in 1984.  He served on the Board of Directors for the Hingham Institution for Savings for seventeen years before fully retiring in 2010. During the course of his career, he developed life-long friendships and earned the respect of his colleagues.

Jim was an avid golfer and a seasoned gardener.  He was also a voracious reader, an ardent Boston Sports fan, loved classical music, and, in earlier years, enjoyed belting out a tune in his Irish tenor voice. A long-time resident of Scituate, he served several terms on the town Advisory Committee. He was a former member of the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, the Cohasset Golf Club and a 57-year member of the First Trinitarian Congregational Church in Scituate where he served as a Trustee and Deacon.

Above all, Jim was a family man. He treasured his home and loved his family and many friends unconditionally.  He delighted in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Affectionately known as “Pop,” his greatest joy was spending time together as a family, especially during the holidays. He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty and honor. He will be dearly missed and always remembered.  

A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate on Wednesday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will follow at Cudworth Cemetery in Scituate.  Donations in his memory may be made on line to The Fisher House Foundation at www.fisherhouse.org.
