Lila Margaret (Mitchell) Sparrell

Lila Margaret (Mitchell) Sparrell passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday November 15 at Rose Court, Linden Ponds, Hingham MA. Lila was born January 2, 1927 in Furnace, Scotland, UK to the late John Mitchell and the late Mary Ann Bradley Cadman (Houston) Mitchell.

Lila grew up in Newfield, Maine and graduated from Nasson College. In 1952 she married the late Charles Sparrell and raised two children while living in Portland, ME; Rye, NY; Manhattan, NY; Marblehead, MA; Lombard, IL, and Scituate, MA.  Lila and Charles enjoyed 55 years of marriage.  Lila moved to Linden Ponds, Hingham, MA in 2007.

Lila was very active in the Harbor United Methodist Church during the 42 years she lived in Scituate.  She was also a founding member of Linden Ponds Community Church and served as treasurer for many years.  She also worked at the law offices of Richard Henderson and the National Board on Fire Services.

Lila was an avid reader, averaging a book a day. She especially liked mysteries and historical fiction. She was a huge Red Sox fan and rarely missed a game on TV. She enjoyed traveling; particularly taking cruises later in life. And she always enjoyed her cherished time with family.

Lila was a devoted mother to her daughter Emily Sparrell of St. Pete Beach, FL; and her son Duncan Sparrell and his wife Patricia of Oakton, VA.   She was a proud grandmother to Courtney Sparrell of Worcester, MA; Hilary Sparrell of Arlington, VA; and Stephanie Sparrell-Martin and her husband Dean Sparrell-Martin of Trumansburg, NY.

A Celebration of Life Service followed by a luncheon reception will be held Saturday, December 15th at 11 AM at Linden Ponds, Hingham, MA.  Those desiring to make a gift in lieu of flowers may send donations to the Linden Ponds Student Scholarship Fund, Linden Ponds Way, Hingham, MA  02043. Lila truly enjoyed her “high school kids” in the Dining Room and was a strong supporter of the scholarship fund.
