Obituary

Ann Elizabeth ("Nancy") Callanan, of Scituate, died peacefully on September 26, 2025

in the presence of her loving family.

Nancy was the daughter of the late Dr. Alfred V. Mahoney and Frances (McKenna) Mahoney

and is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Kevin Bradley Callanan.  She was the beloved mother of Kevin B. Callanan, Jr. (Maryellen) of Boston, Elizabeth Claire Callahan (Michael) of Weston and Christopher Alfred Callanan of Charlestown.

She was the cherished grandmother of Megan E. Callanan, Kevin B. Callanan, III, Grace E. Callahan, Michael F. Callahan and Nora C. Callahan; and loving sister of the late Alfred V. Mahoney, Jr. and the late Paul Stephen Mahoney.

Nancy was born in Quincy on September 21, 1938.  She grew up in Quincy and Scituate and graduated from Thayer Academy in 1956.  Nancy attended Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart graduating in 1960.  She received an M.S.W. degree from the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work in 1962.

Nancy met her future husband, Kevin, on a blind date on April 5, 1962 in Boston.  They were engaged in September 1962 and married on June 22, 1963 at St. John The Baptist Church in Quincy.  They lived in Newport, RI and later  Scituate, where Nancy had spent many happy summers as a child.  In the years that followed, Nancy was a busy young mother raising her three children.

She was active in St. Frances X. Cabrini Parish and later St. Mary of the Nativity Parish.  In particular at St. Mary's, she loved helping arrange baptisms, helping families plan funerals and knitting with the prayer shawl ministry.  In November 2019, Nancy was honored to receive the Chevrus Medal from Cardinal O'Malley at the Cathedral in Boston. Nancy was a proud, life-long member of the Scituate Garden Club, serving as its President from 2003 to 2005. She loved her flower gardens and all things related to flower arranging and horticulture.  She was also an accomplished knitter and enjoyed knitting with a group of ladies known as the "Knit Wits."

Nancy worked as a school adjustment counselor at Milton High School for almost 20 years. She especially enjoyed working with teenage girls who often looked to Nancy for guidance and direction.  She later worked as a family therapist with Brookside Counseling in Hingham before retiring.

Nancy adored her five grandchildren who loved her as their "Nana".  She was happiest being with them at the beach at Stone Avenue or attending their many swimming and tennis activities at Scituate Harbor Yacht Club.  She was extremely proud of their success as students and never missed attending their graduations, from pre-school to college. She was present for each grandchild's first communion and confirmation.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, October 6 at St. Mary of the Nativity Church (1 Kent St., Scituate, MA 02066).  A visitation for friends and family will take place Sunday, 4 to 7 p.m., at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home (1 Summer St., Cohasset, MA 02025).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy's memory to NVNA & Hospice, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.
