Our beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend Ann Verme (née Sapio) 85 passed away on October 10, 2026 after a brief hospitalization, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in New Haven, CT, Ann was the oldest of three children born to the late Mary (Onofrio) Brown and David Sapio. As the eldest sibling, she set a beautiful example of love, family devotion, and kindness that guided her family across generations. Ann built a successful career in the insurance industry, ultimately retiring after many dedicated years.
Ann was widely known for her exceptional cooking skills, which inspired those around her to be more adventurous in the kitchen and develop their own culinary paths. As Ann became older, downsizing became a priority as she wanted to move closer to daughter in Scituate, Mass. Retiring her 5th bunt pan, however, was exceptionally difficult because all 5 had special meaning and function. Ann leaves a legacy of skilled cooks who often refer to recipes and techniques that all still attribute to Ann’s teaching. Often while self-critiquing a dish that she shared with family, she would often suggest that the dish wasn’t as good as it could be; perhaps this was a trait that she shared with her Mother, Mary.
Christmas at Ann and Jimmy’s was magical, not just for the multiple courses and copious desserts but for the immaculate decorating of her home. Her family will forever cherish the memory of her homemade gingerbread cookies carefully adorning the Christmas tree. She truly had a gift for making her home a warm, welcoming, and beautiful place for everyone she loved.
Ann is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, James Verme, her children Suzanne (Peter) O’Halloran, Stephanie Verme (Heri); grandchildren Cormac, Finn, Nora, Maxine, Peter and Kyle; her brothers David (Jodi), Frank (Elizabeth); nephew Justin and nieces Alina and Siena.
Ann’s wishes were simple and clear, she did not want an immediate service but wanted friends and family to gather when convenient to celebrate her life. She had a particular interest that her son-in-law and friends of his choice provide musical entertainment. A service to celebrate her long and meaningful life will be held in Scituate, MA during the spring of 2027. A separate mailing to those who sign the funeral home guest book will receive a specific invitation. In lieu of flowers, Ann suggested donations may be made to MIRA, The Massachusetts immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Collation at www.miracoalition.org
