Betsey L. Detwiler

BETSEY DETWILER, Age 91, died on February 27, 2026, in the company of the family she so loved. She was predeceased by her husband Robert and her son Christopher, as well as siblings William and Sylvia. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: Andrew and Kathy, Peter and Julie, Jonathan and Laurie and Jefferson and Ryan (Meredith). She also leaves her beloved grandchildren, Chad, Kelsey, Conor, Liam, Forrest, Harrison, Alandar, Isabelle, William and Soren, and great grandchildren Parker and Nora. It was her greatest blessing that all her family lived close by and were a constant presence in her life. Betsey is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and the four American Field Service exchange students who called her "Mom."

Betsey was born in Massachusetts, and grew up in Elmwood, a tiny two-street village in East Bridgewater, where her father was the high school principal. She loved to tell of her days walking in the woods, and reading books while perched in her favorite apple tree. That love of reading never left her. She graduated from Wellesley College and later did graduate work at Curry College, with a focus on learning disabilities, an interest cultivated by her developmentally disabled son Chris.

She met her husband, Bob, soon after graduating Wellesley, and raised a family of five boys. They moved into one of the oldest antique houses in Norwell and took on the job of renovating it themselves, transforming it into the welcoming home it still is today. Betsey and Bob taught the boys all manner of sports and skills, from painting houses, to skiing, to digging clams, and catching striped bass.

Betsey’s fondness for reading led to her founding Buttonwood Books and Toys in Cohasset in 1989, creating an institution that still continues to support the intellectual life of the community.

Along with her husband Bob, Betsey cared deeply about social causes and the community she lived in, and she devoted her formidable energy and skills to numerous causes. As a strong proponent of equal rights for women, she was local president of the League of Women Voters. As an advocate for the developmentally disabled, she spent years developing tailored curricula and teaching many students at Hingham South Elementary School. She also donated generously to those causes, and in 1989 was celebrated by Road to Responsibility – an organization supporting the needs of developmentally disabled adults – as its Woman of the Year.

Betsey was a member of First Parish Unitarian Church in Norwell for over 60 years, serving on boards, and singing in the church choir with Bob. Betsey sang with The Chorus Pro Musica, The Unicorn Singers and The Fine Arts Chorale of Weymouth. With the Chorale, Betsey and Bob enjoyed learning the world's great sacred choral music and touring Europe on a number of occasions. In her later years, after Bob’s passing, she also sang every week with Memory Lane Singers, gracing the residents of assisted living facilities with her voice and presence. During those years, she also became an accomplished pastel artist, skillfully capturing the beauty of the local landscape.

Betsey's greatest joy was sitting with Bob at the head of the table in their Chatham summer home, surrounded by family and friends old and new, sharing the clams and fish she had helped teach us to catch, laughing at the often ridiculous family stories - and studiously ignoring the off-color ones - with the beer, wine and conversation flowing. Those dinners will continue to go on, the laughs will be earnest, the love will flourish, and Betsey will always be in our hearts. A celebration of Betsey's life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Road to Responsibility or Friendship Home.
