IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carol L.
(Greenstein-Berge) Stergio
June 5, 1951 – January 18, 2021
Carol Louise Greenstein Berge Stergio of Cohasset, MA passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 69 on January 18, 2021 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous and inspirational year-long battle with glioblastoma. Carol was born in Norwich, CT on June 5, 1951 to Lydia "Tootsie" Erickson Greenstein and Harry Greenstein. She was predeceased by her parents. She leaves her husband and soulmate Jerry, her son Erik Berge, daughter in law Meaghan, adored grandsons Peyton and Finn, all of Cohasset, MA, sister Lisa Kaminski (Bill) of Canterbury, CT, brother Eric Greenstein (Laura) of East Lyme, CT and sister Chris Theodore (Larry) of Pawcatuck, CT. She also leaves her beloved brother and sister in laws from the Stergio clan with whom she laughed loud and partied hard. Carol graduated from Norwich Free Academy, class of 1969 and Mulhenburg College, class of 1973 with a degree in English which served her well in her career editing technical writing and presentations at General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB) in Groton, CT. Carol worked at EB for 32 years retiring as an administrator and events planner to the President of EB and the VP of Engineering. In retirement she moved to Bath, ME in support of her husband Jerry who continued their shipbuilding legacy at General Dynamics Bath Ironworks - both drawn by pride at contributing to our national defense and to the cast of characters one meets in a shipyard. Carol loved to walk - miles and miles daily, read, write, garden, and participate in weekly yoga and strength training with a devoted group of friends. She also loved to travel and enjoyed river cruises on the Saone in eastern France and on the Danube. She also enjoyed Rome and joining dear friends at a villa in Panacale, Italy. Carol had a beautiful alto voice and sang in choirs and groups throughout her life. In her last group in Bath she joined six talented friends in Pleiades ("Seven Sisters" star cluster). Their seven combined voices were truly from the heavens. Home renovation was another true vocation. Carol left her indelible mark and true eye for detail in each of her homes in Mystic, Bath and Cohasset. Jerry affectionately referred to the home in Bath as "the money pit" and Carol as "Ms cost overrun" as everything had to be done just right. Carol was simply a good person. Kind, friendly and outgoing - wherever she lived she seemed to know everyone. Jerry would often tease that she was the "Mayor of Mystic" (and then Bath) while no-one seemed to know him. Carol was generous and donations from the Stergio Family Fund to her favorite causes including the United Way and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will continue. She was also generous with her time and volunteered many hours to worthwhile causes including the Maine Maritime Museum and the Bath Garden Club. She was a trustee for the Davenport Trust in Bath before moving to Cohasset to be near her son Erik and his family and to influence the raising of her beloved grandsons Peyton and Finn. Carol lived life to the fullest, laughed far more than cried, and faced death the way she lived life - with undaunted courage, dignity, grace and without fear. We thank her Brigham & Women's, Dana-Farber, Norwell Visiting Nurses, Celtic Angels, and Pat Roche Hospice House teams for the expert and compassionate care she received from beginning to end. And we are thankful for the support and love shown by the many friends and extended family who reminded us that we are never alone even in the most trying of times. Celebrations of her life will be announced once it is safe again to gather in Cohasset, Bath, and southeastern CT. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol's name can be made to NVNA and Hospice, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061. We wish her "God speed, fair winds and following seas".
