Obituary

Constance Elizabeth (Robbins) Sayrs born on February 1, 1920, died peacefully on April 20, 2011. A lifelong resident of Norwell, Massachusetts, Connie was the beloved wife of Dr. Robert Sayrs for sixty years. Daughter of the late Herbert E. and Emma Robbins, sister of the late Cynthia Kelley, Norman C. and Gordon D. Robbins, Connie had many nieces and nephews; Elin Faye, Wendla, Peter, and Mark Robbins, Herbert Robbins, Susan Sheldon, the late Beverly Page and the late Deborah O'Leary. Connie attended Smith College, and taught at the preschool at the Smith College Day School we she was instrumental in bringing H.R. Garis, author of the well-known Uncle Wiggily books, to her classroom to tell his stories to the children. She went on to obtain a degree from the Massachusetts College of Art, and love painting flowers and animals in the decades to come.

Connie was a former member of the Chief Justice Cushing Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as the Stetson Kindred of America. She was a life member of the Norwell Historical Society and former member of The Trustees of Reservations, The Nature Conservancy, and the North and South Rivers Watershed Association. Connie volunteered for many years in the children's room at both the James and Norwell Public Libraries, where she enriched the lives of many children through her teaching and passion for books. Connie loved to travel and was once co-owner of the Louise Duffy Travel Agency in Hingham. Her travels included a mule expedition to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Connie also enjoyed golfing and downhill skiing. As a member of the beach club, she loved spending days at the beach with her friends and family. Connie always tooks pride and joy in the care of her purebred Kerry Blue Terriers.

A long-term member of both the Hanover and Norwell Garden Clubs, Connie was an avid gardner and loved developing natural landscapes in her back yard. She enjoyed creating cut-flower arrangements. Connie and her dear friend, Jean Simms, won an award from the Norwell Garden Club for their design and planting of a garden for the Beautification Project. Connie was well loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Visiting hours

The service will be preceded by a visiting hour to begin at 9:00am.

Service Information

Services will be held at the McNamara Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central Street, Norwell, MA on April 28, 2011 at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Connie's memory to the James Library, PO Box 164, Norwell, MA 02061.

Interment First Parish Cemetery, Norwell Center.
