Daniel E. Doherty, of Norwell, age 68, on December 6, 2013, following a prolonged illness.  Beloved son of the late Daniel and Annie (Doherty) Doherty.  Devoted husband of Mary E. "Meg" Doherty of Norwell.  Loving father of Meaghan N. and her husband, Seth Groves of Plymouth and D. Griffin Doherty of Norwell.  Brother of Dennis G. Doherty of South Weymouth and the late Sister Ellen Doherty CSJ.  Also survived by several nephews and a niece.

Mr. Doherty was raised in the Savin Hill section of Dorchester.  He was a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School '63, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy '67 and was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve.   Following graduation he was deployed as an engineering officer in the US Merchant Marine to support the Viet Nam war effort.   For over 30 years he was the Chief Engineer on the transoceanic cable ship C.S. Long Lines owned by AT&T and Tycom.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 10 am in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate Harbor. Visiting hours Tuesday, December 10 from 4-8 pm in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central St. (off Rt. 123, near State Police Barracks,), Norwell Center. Interment Washington Street Cemetery, Norwell. In lieu of flowers donations to the Pat Roche Hospice Home, Hingham  NVNA and Hospice, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA. 02061    ( www.nvna.org ).
