David R. Replogle passed away on January 7, 2018 in Cohasset, Massachusetts. He was a book publishing titan, father of five boys, and husband to Jeanne for more than 60 years. David was born in Chicago on February 24, 1931, and spent most of his youth in Mamaroneck, NY where he went to high school. He then attended Dartmouth College where he studied philosophy and rowed on the crew team. After graduating Dartmouth in 1953, Dave served our country in the U.S. Navy before pursuing graduate studies in philosophy at Princeton. After grad school, he joined Doubleday & Company where he started in sales and rose to VP and general manager. Replogle was instrumental in publishing many well-known authors during his 12 years at Doubleday. He then went on to run G. & C. Merriam Company, publishers of the world's most popular dictionary, and Praeger Publishers, a leader in fine art books. Five years later he joined Houghton-Mifflin Company in Boston where he would spend 16 years as Executive Vice President and Director, running their trade and reference divisions. After retiring from Houghton-Mifflin, Dave opened a boutique publishing house working with first-time and veteran authors, and served as a trustee of South Shore Hospital. He was also a director of the Luther I. Replogle Foundation established by his uncle who ran Replogle Globes. Dave was an avid sailor who competed in and won the Marion to Bermuda race with his buddy Ron Noonan, and later sailed regularly in the Pacific Northwest. He was also a tennis player and golfer, and a member of Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY, Cohasset Golf Club in Massachusetts and the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, FL. David is survived by his wife Jeanne, and sons Bill, Stew, Jamie & John. His son Bruce passed away in 2017. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 on February 24th, 2018 at St. Stephens Church in Cohasset.
