Dorothea "Dottie" Marie (Smith) McEachern

It is with immense regret that we announce the passing of Dorothea "Dottie" Marie Smith McEachern, 85, on October 6th, 2026. Dorothea passed away peacefully at South Shore Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born on August 6th, 1941 in Roslindale to her mother Mary Frances Smith and father Thomas Smith Jr. Dorothea grew up there with her siblings Geri Smith and Thomas Smith, graduating Sacred Heart High School, Roslindale in 1959, and moved to Dorchester upon marrying her beloved husband in 1966, Keith H. McEachern, a loving marriage that lasted 48 years until his passing in 2014. She is survived by her three children: Kevin McEachern and his wife Liz of Braintree, MA, Donna Johnson and her husband Dave of Norwell, MA, and Denise Suurhans and her husband Jack of Norwell, MA. As well as her loving grandchildren: Brian and Amanda McEachern, Olivia Suurhans and her fiance Richie Tenore.

Dot and her husband moved to Norwell in 1969 to raise their family and lived there for the remainder of their lives. A treasured member of the community and often identifiable by her Irish knit sweaters, she worked at Cole Elementary School as a teacher's aide and previously worked at Almy's. Dottie was known for her passion for traveling, going on several international cruises with her husband and camping with her grandchildren. A social butterfly, she always looked forward to Wednesday breakfasts at Stanny's with her Dorchester girls, and afternoon tea with Mary Barbara. Nothing meant more to her than her grandchildren, "Mammie" always showed up for their school activities and milestones; anyone who knew her knew she loved to them spoil them above all else. When not out with others, she loved to unwind by reading, playing solitaire, and watching figure skating.

In memory of her, a wake will be held be at McNamara Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central Street Norwell, from 3-6pm on Monday, October 12th. A prayer service will follow afterwards. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations made in her name can be sent to the American Liver Foundation (ALF), PO Box 299, West Orange, NJ, 07052, would be greatly appreciated.
