Edward F, McHugh, Jr. of North Scituate, Massachusetts, passed away on January 22, 2021 at the age of 88.
Mr. McHugh was a partner in the Boston law firm Nutter, McClennen & Fish, from which he retired in 1997. Before joining the firm in 1959, he had served as Law Clerk to Judge John A. Danaher on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Mr. McHugh was a graduate of Portsmouth Abbey School, where he was awarded the Harvard Club of Rhode Island Book Prize as the outstanding boy in his class, and Georgetown University's College and Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown Law Journal. Between college and law school, he was a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
Mr. McHugh was a long-time Director of South Shore Hospital and its parent, South Shore Health and Education Corporation, including two terms as Chairman of the Corporations' Board of Directors. Mr. McHugh also sat on the Boston Bar Association Council, and was the Secretary of the New England Aquarium. He served as court-appointed counsel to the Receiver of South Boston High School during Boston's school desegregation case. He was also President of Hatherly Country Club, and a member of the Knights of Malta, the Union Club, the Clover Club of Boston, and the Lakewood Golf Club of Point Clear, Alabama. After retirement, he was a volunteer consultant for the New England Executive Service Corps. He was listed in Who's Who in the World.
Mr. McHugh leaves his wife, Mary Judith (Murchison), their children, Mary McKelvey of Cohasset, Massachusetts and her husband James, Alexandra McHugh of Canton, Connecticut, Edward lll of Simsbury, Connecticut and his spouse Trina, and Michael of Milton, Massachusetts, nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson Michael C. McHugh of Milton, Massachusetts and his brothers John W. McHugh of Hingham, Massachusetts, Robert C. McHugh of Scituate, Massachusetts and Richard L. McHugh of Wellesley, Massachusetts.
Internment will be private. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham, Massachusetts in the spring.
