Obituary

Edward Nichols Wadsworth, age 86, passed away at his home in Cohasset, Massachusetts, on December 24th, 2023. He was loved and treasured by his wife Suzanne (Maloney), his son Nathaniel (Kate Droste), and his granddaughters Calliope (6) and Clio (1). We was predeceased by his son Peter and his brother David. Edward (who went by Ed) was born on April 10th, 1937, to Jerome and Dorothy (Nichols) in Cohasset. He grew up in the town of his birth, attending local primary schools. A graduate of Thayer Academy and Harvard College ('59), he served three years as an officer in the US Navy stationed in San Diego with tours in the Western Pacific. He subsequently attended The University of Michigan Law School ('65) and then returned to the Boston area to practice law. Ed raised his two boys with his loving wife in the Bay Village neighborhood of Boston. He spent most of his career at The New England Mutual Life Insurance Company as a corporatetransaction lawyer before retiring as General Counsel of the asset management group NVest. Once retired, he obtained a masters degree in Environmental Law from Vermont Law School and moved back to Cohasset. Ed was an athlete, remaining active nearly his entire life. At Harvard he earned varsity letters in squash and baseball (a starting pitcher senior year). He continued to play competitive baseball while serving in the US Navy. For decades afterwards, played competitive squash at the Harvard Club and the Tennis & Racquet Club, where he also frequently enjoyed a beer or two with his friends and competitors. Apart playing squash, he engage in a variety of athletics, including bicycling, kayaking, and playing court tennis. Ed took a delight in gardening, especially growing day-lilies, hostas, and ornamental grasses, and experimenting with various unusual plants. He was particularly fond of bright flowers and plants with enormous leaves. Ed was also a sports car enthusiast. He owned many small European convertibles throughout his life, starting with both an Austin and MGA convertibles in college. Ed was a decent and thoughtful man, and a friend to many.
