(Baskins) Mayers

Elvoid C. Mayers was born December 27, 1927, in Providence RI. She was a retired teacher and former chairman of the Social Studies Department in the Rockland, Massachusetts public school system where she worked for over forty years. Elvoid was beloved by her students and co-workers. She died peacefully at home on Sunday, February 5, 2023.
She was a graduate of Livingstone College in North Carolina and Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. She was a member of the executive board of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and from 1981-82 she served as the president of the Plymouth County Educational Association. As an active member in the women's honor society, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, she served as president of the Massachusetts Chapter from 1981 to 1983. Elvoid was president of her local which includes inland towns south of Randolph from 1976 to 1978. She was also the chairperson of the Norwell Democratic Town Committee for over twenty years. In addition, she served as a delegate to the Massachusetts Democratic State Convention on numerous occasions while actively supporting numerous election drives and candidates on the local and state levels.
After becoming the first full-time Black teacher for the town of Rockland, Elvoid Mayers was a mentor to many students, teachers, and other educators. She was passionate about filling in the gaps about Black history and the contributions and the contributions of African-Americans.
Always the trailblazer, Elvoid was the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements, including the Mass Teacher's Association's Martin Luther King Jr. Award in Human Relations in 1981 and the Norwell Democratic Town Committee's recognition for her dedication to freedom, justice, and equality.
The beloved wife of the now deceased David A. Mayers, Jr., Elvoid was also the devoted mother of Joanne Mayers-Walker (John) of Alexandria, Virginia, David Mayers III, (Barbara) of Washington, DC, Damon Mayers (Lynn Bowman) of Norwell, and Darryl Mayers (Juliette) of Norwell. She was preceded in death by her loving brother, Elliott Baskins. She held deep affection for her nieces and nephews Marcia Bibby, Ronald Greene, Wendell Clark, Gerald Clark, Joyce Clark-Henry, Josette Watson, Nadine Goode, Shelley Davis, and many other relatives and friends.
Elvoid was the loving grandmother of Omari, Attallah, Ayaan, David IV, Dyani, Aaron, Conor, D'Anna, and Danielle and four great grandchildren.
Visiting hours are on Friday, February 10, 2023, from 4:00-7:00pm at the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central Street (off Rt. 123 near the State Police Barracks), Norwell Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11 at 11:00 o'clock, at First Parish of Norwell, 24 River Street, Norwell MA.
