Ethel H. Brown September 29, 1926 - July 24, 2024 Ethel Brown passed away peacefully on July 24th at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham. She was a lifelong resident of Scituate. The daughter of the late Wilson T. Hollis and Edith B. Hollis, Ethel developed a passion for singing and joined the First Baptist Church senior choir at age 13. She married John R Brown Sr. of Scituate on September 2nd, 1945; the day the Japanese formally surrendered to the Allied Forces. In 1947, after the birth of their daughter, Ellen, Ethel and John (aka "Bub") moved into The "Fitts Farmhouse" on Stockbridge Rd. John Jr was born in 1950 and Wilson in 1952. As her family grew, Ethel continued to develop her singing voice. She was a featured soloist in several local churches. In1956 she became a charter member of the newly formed Scituate Choral Arts Society under the direction of the late William Adams. Ethel was a wonderful hostess of family holiday gatherings and a devoted sister to brothers Wilson (Bud) Hollis and Walter B Hollis; sisters Dorothy Mott, Winifred Duhamel, Joy Hildebrandt and their children. Ethel was tireless promoter of her three children as they too pursued careers in music. Ellen graduated from Oberlin College and earned her Masters Degree at New England Conservatory. John and Wilson were drawn to Rock 'n Roll. And then there was knitting. Mittens, hats, socks, afghans, sweaters and shawls…all gifted to church fairs and family members. Ethel co-founded a knitting group in 2004 called "The Close Knitters" and together they created and donated hundreds of hats to the children at Dana Farber /Boston Children's Cancer Center. Ethel Hollis Brown lived a life of service to her family, her spiritual and musical community. She filled our world with her phenomenal smile, endless cups of coffee and wondrous baked goods. She comforted all in troubled times and almost everyone she knew had their name and address entered into her Christmas Card file. She was a tireless letter and card writer and kept an insightful, poignant diary for decades. Ethel is survived by her sons John and Wilson; her daughter in law Marlene Brown; Her brother Walter B Hollis of Scituate; her Grandchildren, Katherine Curran, Alexander Brown, John E.
