Fernando A. M. Sousa, of Scituate, MA, died peacefully at home on April 5, 2026, at age 76, surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Born on February 3, 1950, in São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Fernando was the first of three children of Antonio and Maria. At age 16, he immigrated to the United States to live with his uncle in Providence, Rhode Island; his family followed a year later.
Fernando graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 1969 and went on to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology and Northeastern University. He was a regional manager at Brigham’s Restaurant, where he met the love of his life, Carol, his devoted wife of 49 years. During his time there, he developed a wide network of lifelong friends, which later led him to help develop Ronzio’s Pizza in Rhode Island. He also worked closely with his brother on many business ventures.
Fernando served in the Army Reserves for seven years and loved sharing stories from his time in service with fellow veterans.
In 1976, Fernando moved to Carol’s hometown of Scituate, MA, where he remained a proud resident for five decades. He was a devoted and adoring father to his three children, who were the center of his world and his greatest source of pride.
In 1995, Fernando received a heart transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His strength, resilience, and unwavering devotion to family guided his recovery. He never missed a hockey or lacrosse game and was able to watch his children grow into adulthood. Over time, his goals evolved from hoping to see his children graduate high school to cherishing moments like taking his grandchildren for rides on his John Deere tractor while mowing the lawn.
Fernando found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed working outdoors, sharing meals with family and friends, spending time with his beloved French bulldogs, and enjoying good conversation over many glasses of red wine. He was especially fond of time spent at the family home in Nelson, New Hampshire, where he created many cherished memories.
His life was a testament to resilience, love, and an unwavering commitment to family, and he will be remembered always for his strength and generosity.
Fernando is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his children, Nicholas and his partner Rebecca Goldman, Andrew and his wife Elizabeth, and Sara and her husband James Alvarez; his grandchildren, Harris Sousa, and Tripp and Wesley Alvarez; his sister, Rosa, and her husband Octavio Melo; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Maria DeSousa; his dear brother, Joe; his father- and mother-in-law, Harold and Joan Gerbis; his sister-in-law, Jay Gerbis; and his nephew, Harold Gerbis III.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Fernando’s life during visiting hours at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 160 Main Street, Cohasset, on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 4:00–7:00 PM, and at a Funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Church, 10 Summer Street, Cohasset, on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
