Gino J. Bastanza, 93, of Scituate, died peacefully at his home on January 4, 2013. Born on June 3, 1919 in Dorchester. Beloved son of the late Gaetano (Thomas) and Luigina Bastanza. Mr. Bastanza was predeceased by his brother Vincent and his beloved companion of 40 years, Dorothy M. Holmes. He is survived by his loving cousins and Dorothy's family including her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as "Papa Gene."
Raised in Medford, Gino is remembered as a devoted son, brother, cousin and companion. He received a Bachelor's of Science degree in science from Tufts University in 1942 and was a World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Force.
In 1947 he became a junior chemist for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works. During his illustrious 42 year career with the Department, he held various titles including Chief of Laboratory, Assistant Research and Materials Engineer and lastly that of Research and Materials Engineer from 1982 to his retirement in December of 1989.
Gino was active in the Northeastern States Materials Engineers organization and was once host of the conference for the Northeastern States Materials Engineers in Sturbridge. He was also a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Massachusetts.
Gino's family's love of the ocean drew them to summer in Scituate for years before he decided to make it his permanent residence. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's Church in Scituate. Gino loved his home and would tend to its meticulous landscaping daily. He would also travel to Italy frequently to visit numerous friends and extended family. He was a cherished member of the Holmes family and was present for many milestones in their lives. His charm, wit and generosity will be missed.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 10 am in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate Harbor. Visiting hours Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013 from 8:30-9:30 am in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset, prior to the Funeral Mass. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
