Lt. Col., US Army, Hamilton Alan Cooper, age 80 of Norwell, passed peacefully at home on August 4, 2011 surrounded by family. Son of the late Major General H. Kenneth Cooper (NGUS) and Iva (Westgate) Cooper of Columbus, OH, he graduated from Ohio State University in 1952. Lt. Col. Cooper had a distinguished career in the US Army serving for over 23 years, including Korea and Viet Nam. During his service, he was awarded numerous medals and commendations including the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal. Following his military service, Hamilton was a director at Mass. Respiratory Hospital in Braintree.
An active member of South Shore Yacht Club in North Weymouth, he sailed for over 30 years. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Mercedes-Benz Club and the Chanticleers. In his spare time he enjoyed painting water color seaside landscapes. Hamilton was the beloved husband of Gail M. (Peoples) Cooper for 44 years and the loving father of Nancy Ellen Blake and her husband, Dr. Randall Blake of Ponte Verde Beach, FL., Bethany Cooper and her partner, Mark Yacovone of Oxford, MS., and Meredith Long her husband, Dr. Morgan Long of Lakeville, MA. Also survived by his grandchildren, Erica and Todd Blake of Ponte Verde Beach, FL., and Peyton and Robyn Long of Lakeville, MA.
Visiting hours Monday, Aug. 15, 2011 from 10-11 am in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central St. (off Rt 123, after State Police Barracks), Norwell Center, followed by a Funeral Service at 11 am. Interment V.A. Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne, MA. on Monday, Aug. 15 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hamilton's memory to the Norwell VNA & Hospice Organization.
