Helen J. (Carroll) Pratt, age 87, of Cohasset, passed away on November 7, 2011. Beloved wife of the late Burtram Pratt and the loving mother of Peter J. Pratt of San Francisco, formerly of Cohasset, and Joy P. Schiffmann and her husband, Richard of Cohasset. Beloved sister of Margaret Morrill of Port Orange, FL. Adoring grandmother of Benjamin Pratt, Jared Pratt, Helen Schiffmann and Richard Schiffmann.
Helen was born in Winchester, Ma and in her early years held New England titles in three sports, tennis, both singles and doubles, swimming and field hockey. She graduated from Sargent College of Boston University in 1945, and was inducted in to The BU Athletic Hall of Fame 50 years later. She went on to become a physical education teacher and coach at Winchester High School and the University of Maine, Orno. She came to Cohasset in the early 1950's to teach swimming for the Red Cross and over the next 50 years, had an impact on several generations though her teaching, coaching and volunteering.
She was a physical education teacher and coach at Derby Academy in Hingham, Cohasset High School and the Joseph Osgood Elementary School in Cohasset. She was tennis pro at the Cohasset Golf Club and on the founding committee for the Sandy Beach Association and the Cohasset Swim Center. For the last ten years of her working life she was a real estate broker at Hunneman Coldwell Banker. Helen also severed as a trustee of the South Shore Playhouse Associates, owners of the South Shore Music Circus. She was a devoted member of Saint Anthony's parish.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 at 11 am in St. Anthony Church, 10 Summer St., Cohasset. Visiting hours 9-11 am on Monday, Nov. 14 prior to the funeral Mass in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (Across from St. Anthony Church) Cohasset, with a reception in the Saint Anthony's Parish Hall immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen's memory may be made to The South Shore Community Center, 3 No. Main St., Cohasset, MA. 02025 for the new playground capital campaign.
