Horst K Nuermberger, of Norwell, MA. born Feb. 18, 1934 in Zwickau, Germany, passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at home. Much beloved and longtime friend to the Devers and Schleicher families of Norwell, MA. He was the brother of Asta Pentzold and significant other, Hellmut of Rabenau, Germany and Rolf Nuermberger and wife Gabi of Welzheim, Germany. Horst is also survived by three nieces, three great nieces, and 2 great-nephews.
Horst escaped from East Germany, which was behind the Iron Curtain at the time, and worked for the US Navy as a cook in West Germany. In 1957, Horst immigrated to the US as a refugee. He was sponsored by the Atlantic Methodist Church in North Quincy, MA. He became a US citizen six years after arriving in this country and was proud to be an American.
Horst was trained as a Culinary Artist in Europe and as part of his sponsorship plan, he was given a job as a baker working at Newcomb's Bakery in No. Quincy. After a few years, he became a pastry chef at the Omni-Parker House in Boston. In 1966, he opened the Bavarian Pastry Shop in No. Quincy. The shop moved to the Queene Ann Section of Norwell, MA in the summer of 1972. In 1976, Horst was hired as a culinary arts teacher at Assabet Valley technical High School in Marlboro, MA. He worked there until his retirement in 1996.
Horst enjoyed scuba diving, the culinary arts, ice carving, boating and working with his hands. When the movie Cleopatra opened in Boston, Horst was hired by Pier 4 to do the ice sculpture of Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor) and Marc Anthony (Richard Burton).
Horst was an avid supporter for all things equine, setting the stage for multiple world champions to shine as members of Jettset Endevers Show Horses team and the Appaloosa Horse Club. He traveled all over the country with the show team.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 2 pm in the United Church of Christ, 460 Main St., Norwell, MA. 02061. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Norwell Food Pantry.
