Irene Cecelia Paton

Irene C. (Gamache) Paton, 89, of Norwell, MA passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Irene was born on February 1, 1937 in Providence, RI to Marie Anna and Octave Gamache. Irene graduated from high school in Brunswick, Maine. She went on to marry the love of her life, George Paton in 1957 and together, they raised four children. Irene was a devoted wife and mother who loved nurturing plants and flowers, preparing meals for the people she loved, and seeing new places. Spending time with her family brought her the greatest joy. Irene worked as an executive assistant with Quaker Oats and at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

In her later years, Irene navigated the journey of memory loss with quiet grace and dignity. The family thanks the staff at The Cordwainer for their compassionate care over the past year.

Irene was preceded in death by four sisters, Evelyn Klaus, Theresa Bouchard, Dolores Elliot and Lorraine Tetreault.

She is survived by her husband George Paton of Norwell, MA; children, Richard Scott Paton and his partner Sandra Butcher of Marshfield, MA, Melissa Ann (Paton) Madden and her husband Christopher of Fairlee, VT, Gregory John Paton of New York, NY and Stephen George Paton and his wife Karen of Sherborn, MA; grandchildren Samantha Madden (Connor Manning), Evan Madden (Brooke Maddock) and Lexi Paton; her sister Marcy Brenner and brother Raymond Gamache.

No formal services will be held at this time, the family is planning a private celebration of Irene’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an association or charity of your choice.
