James E. Carroll, 83, longtime resident of Scituate and Cohasset, born and raised in South Boston passed away after a brief illness on Friday June 28, 2013 at Linden Ponds in Hingham surrounded by loved ones. "Jimmy" was the son of the late Fred Carroll and Catherine Brodie of South Boston MA.   He is survived by six children, Jacqui Scott of Cohasset, Jennifer Farwell of Scituate, James 'Ted' Carroll, Jr. of Cohasset, Joe Carroll of Palm Desert, California, Stephen Carroll of Hanover, Katie Lazarus of London, and was the former husband of Kathleen Carroll (Reilly) of Scituate, MA.  He was the beloved father-in-law of Elaine Carroll of Hanover and Paul Lazarus of London, and the adored "Puppy Carroll" to Madison and Brodie Carroll of Hanover.

Jim served honorably in the US Navy during the Korean War, serving on the USS Edisto and the USS Pittsburgh and achieved the rank of Lieutenant-JG.  After returning from service, he was an aide to former MA Governor/Mayor of Boston James Michael Curley and later pursued successful sales careers in the beverage, real estate, and advertising industries.  He retired in 2003 after a brief time with the MBTA in their Real Estate and Safety Departments.  An eloquent and passionate public speaker, his skills were recognized in an award from President Harry S. Truman in 1955 for being one of America's best college orators while he attended Northeastern University.

Jim was a close friend of the late Hall of Fame baseball player Ted Williams. He worked on John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign and was retained by the White House after JFK's assassination to handle all sensitive correspondence after his death.  He was involved in various civic and fundraising activities for the Knights of Columbus and other local charities.  After retirement, he devoted countless hours helping friends in need who were dealing with health issues, driving them to treatments and doctor appointments.  Special thanks to all of the staff at Linden Ponds Renaissance Gardens in Hingham for their invaluable care and support, allowing the man we loved to move peacefully onto eternal life with dignity.
