Jane (Burrell) Lacy- died at her home in Cohasset on Sunday, November 13, 2011 following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on June 14, 1927 in Dubuque, Iowa, the only child of John and Florence Burrell. She attended Dubuque Public Schools and completed her secondary education at Kemper Hall, an Episcopal girls boarding school in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She graduated from Wellesley College in June 1949 and two weeks later married Ben Lacy, a fellow Dubuquer then attending Harvard Law School. For the next two years, while Ben was completing his legal studies, she worked in the Rare Book Department of the Boston Public Library as a research assistant. Upon his graduation they exhausted her savings on a "grand tour" of Europe. On their return, they decided to settle in the Greater Boston area, a decision which, despite their affection for their native city, they never regretted. After one year of apartment dwelling in Cambridge, during which their son Robinson was born, they bought an old house in South Natick where they lived for the next years and filled their family with three daughters, Sara, Jessie, and Katy. In 1961 they moved to Brookline, where they lived for 28 years.

In 1965 Jane completed a master's program in Early Childhood Education at Wheelock College; in 1973 she attended the Harvard Summer School to take courses in Children's Literature and in 1980 she earned her second master's degree in Library Science at Simmons College. She served as the assistant librarian at the Lawrence School in Brookline from 1975 to 1982 and as the librarian of the Chestnut Hill School from 1982 to 1989. In addition to these educational and professional activities, she found time to serve on the Ladies' Committee at the MFA, as a member of the Board and Secretary of Young Audiences of Massachusetts and on the vestry of All Saints Church in Brookline.

Beginning in 1962 she and her family spent their summers at the Glades in Minot (Scituate) and it was largely because of their fondness for the Scituate/Cohasset area that in 1989, with the nest empty and desiring to downsize, she and Ben left Brookline and acquired a small house on Little Harbor in Cohasset, where they lived for the rest of her life. In Cohasset, she enjoyed her participation in the Cohasset Garden Club and the Discussion Club and was an active member of St. Stephen's Parish. Throughout their 62 year marriage, she and Ben traveled extensively. She particularly enjoyed their trips to Mexico, France, and Italy. Her greatest interest, however, remained her extended family, of which she was the focal point. She is survived by her husband, her four children, 10 grandchildren and two step grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen's Church, 43 Highland Ave., Cohasset on Friday, Nov. 18th, 2011 at 3 pm.
