Obituary

Jean Stephenson Simms, beloved wife of Harold G. Simms, of Marshfield (formerly of Norwell), died peacefully at home Sunday, May 20, after a courageous, eighteen-year battle with Parkinson's disease.

Jean was born in Rochester, NY, April 7, 1926, but spent her childhood in New Britain, CT. She attended Boston University's Practical Arts and Letters, graduating in 1948 with a bachelor's of arts degree in applied art. Her first job was in the advertising division of a telephone company, designing and laying out ads. Next, she worked at the Dewey and Almy Chemical Company in its art department for the Cryovac division.

Harold and Jean married in 1953, and eventually settled in Norwell, where Jean was an art teacher at both the junior high and high school for eighteen years. After retiring, she continued to teach art to adults.

Jean was an accomplished watercolorist and an active member of the North River Arts Society, Scituate Art Association, and South Shore Art Center. She won many awards for her paintings. Jean was the featured poster artist for the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of North River Arts Society. Many of her works are displayed in public buildings. She was also an avid gardener and a member of the Hanover Garden Club.

In addition to her husband, Jean is survived by their sons David and his wife, Maureen of Milford, Michigan, and their children Amanda Princz and her husband, Victor, Eric, Kevin, and Abigail; Paul and his wife, Cindy of Salem, New Hampshire, and their children Benjamin and Michelle, and granddaughter Brooke; Nathan and his wife Patty of Marshfield and their children Nathan and Colleen; and William and his wife Patricia of Marshfield and their children, Matthew, Michael, Stephenson, and Liam. Jean is also survived by her sister Gertrude and her husband, William, and nephews Daniel and Robert, and niece Elizabeth.
