Jennifer (Jen) DeLucia Burtner passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 17, 2015 with her beloved husband, Jason Burtner and father, Lou DeLucia by her side. A loving mom, Jen spent many happy hours with her children tending their chickens, garden, and going on walks with their family dog. When she was with her husband, children, animals, and outside, Jen was most happy.
Jennifer was born on October 14, 1965 in Brooklyn, NY. She was raised in New Jersey until the age of 14 when she moved to Pennsylvania and later Kansas until her college years. Jennifer graduated cum laude from Gordon College with a degree in Physical Education with teaching certification and a minor in Psychology.
Jen loved the outdoors from a very young age and was extremely athletic. As a young girl, she was an accomplished swimmer, having participated in the local swim team and as a teenager, achieved her lifeguard license. Jennifer was an avid downhill and cross-country skier and always looked forward to her family trips to the Berkshires during the winter. There was no sport or outdoor activity she did not excel in. She picked up a tennis racket and won many competitions.
After college, Jen became a teacher for Nature's Classroom because she could never work behind a desk. Outward Bound soon beckoned and she spent many happy years working both in the US and the international schools. She also attended the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander Wyoming completing rigorous Instructor and Wind River Mountaineering trainings. An adventuress at heart, she loved to travel and would often travel on her own, but she especially loved traveling with friends. One highlight of her travels was trekking through Nepal and the Annapurna trail. The source of many "Jen" stories were her extended trips to the Asia, Belize, and Mexico. Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center in Boston Harbor was her home base and it is here that she met and then married the love of her life, Jason Burtner.
After a beautiful wedding on Nantucket, Jen and Jason spent time living in Somerville and the seaside community of Hull where they started a family. Jen and Jason later settled in the rural town of Norwell surrounded by an incredible community of friends, neighbors, and animals. She could always be found walking in the Town's many parks and preserved open spaces. Jen could never pass by an animal without stopping to scratch behind an ear or rub a belly. Married for 17 years, their family spent many joyous weekends in Cape Cod, Maine, and summer trips to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
Jen is survived by her husband, Jason; their two children, Lucas and Sage; father, Liberato Dominick DeLucia; mother, Nancy Lewis (Dinsmore) DeLucia; brother, Victor and his wife, Renee; mother-in-law, Vanessa (Johnson) Burtner; father-in-law, David Burtner; sisters-in-law, Jennifer Bleak and Elaine George, and their husbands Phillip and Ted; nieces and nephews, Alec, Trent, Marseilles, Lily, Summit, Boyce, Anders, and aunts, cousins and friends.
A wake will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 3-7 PM at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central Street, Norwell, MA 02061. The funeral service and interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention to Cruelty to Animals at https://www.justgive.org/JenniferDeLuciaBurtner
