Joan Elizabeth (Riley) McKelvey of Cohasset, MA and Granby, CT passed away on November 25, 2014 at the age of 92. Joan was the wife of the late Vincent T. McKelvey. She is survived by her sons Vincent of Minneapolis, MN, Paul and is wife Barbara of Oak Bluffs, MA and James and his wife Mary of Cohasset, MA. She was the beloved grandmother of Christopher, Michael J., Annie, Maria, Paul, James, John, Kate and Michael P. McKelvey and the great-grandmother of Hannah and Kyle McKelvey. Joan is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends and caretakers at Sunrise in Cohasset.
Joan was born in the Bronx and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas School in NYC. She spent her summers at Rockaway Beach and it is there that she developed her love of the ocean. As a career Army wife, Joan made homes for her family on bases in Japan, Germany, New Jersey, Georgia, Vermont, Massachusetts, Alaska and Hawaii. Joan loved cooking, entertaining, and playing golf. She learned to play Mahjong while stationed in Japan, and played with a special group of friends in Granby for many years. Joan loved her husband, her sons and their wives, her grandchildren, a good laugh and a glass of Southern Comfort. She had a special devotion to St. Jude.
A Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 28 at St. Anthony Church, Cohasset at 10 am. Visiting Hours are Friday from 9-10 at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (across from St. Anthony Church) Cohasset.
