Mulvehill
January 17, 1931 – May 4, 2024
Rev. John R. Mulvehill S.T.D., 93 of Falmouth, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024. A native of Westwood, MA, he was ordained February 2, 1957 thus beginning his pastoral passion of serving God and his many parishioners throughout the Boston Diocese and Falmouth, MA.
After graduating from Boston College High School (1948) and The College of the Holy Cross (1952), Father Mulvehill attended St. John's Seminary in Brighton, MA. His first assignment was at St. Mary's in Randolph, followed by St. Benedict's in Somerville.
He attended St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland from which he was awarded a doctorate degree in Sacred Theology in 1968. An advocate of lifelong learning, he also pursued post-doctoral studies at American College, Louvain, Belgium and North American College in Rome.
Upon his return to the Archdiocese of Boston, he took up residence at St. Theresa of Avila in West Roxbury, where he was a professor of theology and later President of Cardinal Cushing College, Brookline, MA. His following assignment was as Director of Religious Education and the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for the Archdiocese of Boston.
Returning to parish life, Father Mulvehill was assigned as pastor of St. Francis Xavier in South Weymouth. His final assignment was St. Anthony of Padua in Cohasset where he served as pastor for 24 years. He retired to Falmouth in 2019, where he assisted at St Joseph the Guardian parish and the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Son of the late John and Margaret (Doggett) Mulvehill, he is predeceased by his sister and
brother-in-law, Mary C. (Mulvehill) and Thomas R. Donelin of Westwood, and his sister and brother-in-law Margaret (Mulvehill) and Paul F. Sullivan of Brewster, and nephew Thomas R. Donelin, Jr. of Westwood. He is survived by five nieces and a nephew: Michael J. Sullivan and his wife Nancy of Naples, FL, Patricia A. Donelin of Norwood, Jacquelyn M. (Sullivan) Finley of Brewster, MA and Flagler Beach, FL, Kathryn Donelin of Westwood, Jean M. (Sullivan) and her husband Jeff Piazza of Wellesley and Brewster, and Clare (Donelin) and her husband Kevin Mazza of Quincy. Father Mulvehill is also survived by his great nieces and nephews: Bridget, Emily, and Grace Mazza of Quincy, and Tyler Piazza of Boston, and Michael Piazza of Wellesley.
Visiting Hours for Father Mulvehill will be held in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Cohasset from 3-7pm on Sunday May 12 with the Vigil Service starting at 3pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday May 13 at 11:00am from St. Anthony of Padua Church, Cohasset.
Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Falmouth, MA on Tuesday May 14 at 12pm.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church in Falmouth at a later date.
In remembrance of Father Mulvehill's dedication to his priestly vocation, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. John's Seminary, Attn: Father Stephen E. Salocks, 127 Lake Street, Brighton, MA. 02135
