John (Jack) C. Whitney, of Scituate, passed away on September 29, 2013, his 90 th birthday. Born in Rockland on September 29, 1923, he was the son of the late John N.Whitney and Priscilla (Studley) Whitney. Husband of the late Jeanne (Hawes) Whitney, RN. Survived by three children, Sharon Lee Eno of Plymouth, and husband, Steven, Diane Walsh of Scituate, and John C. Whitney Jr. of Monroe, CT., and wife, Stephanie. John was also the father of the late Kimberly and Richard Whitney.
Much loved Grandfather of Michael J. Post and wife, Kimberly, of Plymouth, Shawna Lee Post, of Plymouth, MA, Adrienne Walsh, John C. Whitney III and Brandon Whitney. Cherished great-grandfather "Papa" of MacKenzie and Jack Post. Brother of Jane Fisher of St. Paul, MN.
A graduate of Rockland High, Class of 1941, John was inducted into the Rockland Hall of Fame in 2009 for baseball, football, and basketball. He graduated from Bates College in Maine and received a Master's Degree in 1948 from Boston University.
John served in the US Army as an Army Ranger, from 1943 to 1945, 1 st Lt., Infantry Commander, 254 th Infantry Regiment, 63 rd Infantry Division. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, and Presidential Citation for his service.
In 2012, Jack was appointed a "Chevalier" of the Legion of Honor, the French's highest military honor, for his tremendous sacrifice and courage during the Colmar Pocket Battle. Awarded by France's past President, Mr. Nicholas Sarkozy. Additionally, a statue was put in the town of Jebstein, France, in honor of all of the men that fought to liberate France from Nazi occupation.
John worked for 3M Company, in the Printing Division, salesman for all of New England and part of the Midwest, for 35 years until retirement. He loved golfing, and was a member of Scituate Country Club, and the Widows Walk in Scituate.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at 11 am in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 from 4 to 8 pm in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, Cohasset. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to Covenant House, Times Square Station, PO Box 731, New York, NY 10108-0900.
