Joseph Anthony Marshall III, age 68, long time resident of Plymouth, MA, passed away peacefully on New Year's Eve, surrounded by his family and friends.

Joe was passionate about his career as a landscape architect as a partner with Marshall/Gary and as an associate at Horiuchi Solien in Falmouth.  He served on the Plymouth Design Review Board for over 20 years, most recently as chairman.  Joe graduated from Milton High School where he was captain of the hockey team, attended Norwich Academy, and earned an undergraduate degree as well as a Masters degree in Landscape and Architecture Design from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  Joe, as a registered landscape architect, designed award winning landscapes in New England, including the Franklin Park Zoo, Boston, Buttonwood Park Zoo, New Bedford, and the new Duxbury Middle/High School.  Joe proudly served our country as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corp in Viet Nam.

Joe, lover of life and the ocean, could often be found at his second "home," the Point at Long Beach, either fishing, tossing a Frisbee, or photographing the clouds, sunrises, and sunsets. An avid sailor, he relished every opportunity to sail his Hobie Cat with his brother across Plymouth Bay in a stiff 25-knot breeze while hiked out over the rail in his trapeze harness.  Louds Island, Maine, where many wonderful memories were created, held a special place in Joe's heart.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Terry Prescott Marshall, his children, Sarah Jordan, Joseph A. Marshall IV, and Crystal Alferes, and his seven grandchildren.  He was the oldest of his siblings, Kathy Enegren, the late John Marshall, Paul Marshall, and David Marshall.

Joe's very nature made anyone in his presence feel valued and comfortable.  He enthusiastically gave of his time, energy, and endless talents to those in need.  He was and will always be a bright light in the lives of his family and many friends.  To know Joe was to love him; he never failed to make us laugh.

A memorial service will be held at North River Community Church in Pembroke on Thursday, January 7, at 3:00 o'clock.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joseph Anthony Marshall Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 3143, Plymouth, MA  02361, with its mission to serve the betterment of the Plymouth community.
