Obituary

Lynne Layman, 79, accomplished photographer, dedicated volunteer and extraordinary friend, passed away at the Nursing facility Alliance Health in Braintree, MA on October 17, 2025.

Lynne was born on June 8, 1946 in Glendale Ohio and put up for adoption after the death of her mother. She was adopted by Dudley and Caroline Layman of Greenwich, Connecticut when Lynne was almost a year old.

She had a very happy childhood including travels with her parents to Europe and Asia.  She graduated from Greenwich Academy in 1964 and received her BA  in French and Physical Education from Iowa Wesleyan University in 1968.

That same year Lynne lost both her parents. Her father died of a heart attack in January 1968 and her mother in August, of Cancer.

Later in life Lynne connected with the families of her biological mother in Tennessee and with her half-siblings on her birth father's side, the late Ann Little Smith of New Jersey and Doug Little in Seattle, WA.

The inheritance from her parents allowed Lynne to relocate to New England. She moved in  with her friends Nancy and Sally Mc Cormick on  Surfside Ave. and worked in their Bookstore on Country Way in North Scituate. After the devastating storm of 1978 the house on Surfside was lost and Lynne bought her own place on Bullrush Farm Road. That house and its yard became the center of Lynne's life for more than 30 years. Her Golden Retrievers –Winnie, Bonnie, Chappie, Angie – were her beloved companions and a walk with the dog on the beach, at World's End or in Wheelwright Park was her daily routine. She was an expert gardener, an excellent tennis player, an enthusiastic rower at the Cohasset Maritime Institute (CMI) and a lover of cars and boats. Her beautifully furnished home was a gathering place for a large circle of friends and their families.

Her cousin Richard stayed with her for a while, her friend Ulla Reidel found a place there for several months before she moved to Maine and Helen Cato and her husband moved in for a time before they returned to England. Lynne was always there when help was needed, be it a paint job or helping to pack things up when a move was at hand.

Lynne loved to travel and joined friends on trips to Nepal, Kenya, Chile, Bolivia, England, Germany and the Carribean, bringing back lots of souvenirs and tons of photos.

She was a reliable volunteer with The Trustees of Reservations, with Meals on Wheels and driving the shuttle for the elderly. She honed her skills as photographer at photographic workshops and won awards for her photography from the Cohasset Art Center. Many families at the South Shore called on Lynne for their Christmas family pictures and she established herself as a sought-after wedding photographer.

When the maintenance of her house became unsustainable, Lynne moved to an apartment in Lincoln Park in North Scituate. She lived there for ten years and was a beloved member of the community. After her diagnosis with Parkinson's life became more challenging over the years and eventually it became necessary for her to seek nursing care. She spent almost two years at Alliance Health in Braintree under the outstanding care of a dedicated staff of nurses and administrators. They can be assured of the gratefulness of Lynne's friends who visited her faithfully and of Lynne herself. We will all miss her dearly and remember her fondly.
