Makiko "Maki" Kayama Hardy born November 30, 1946 in Kyoto, Japan died very, very peacefully at her home in Scituate early Monday morning September 17, 2012 surrounded by her family. She had been fighting lung cancer for a year and a half but was active through late June including a final visit to Japan to say goodbye to family and friends.

She leaves behind her husband of 38 years Douglas Hardy, daughters Grace (b. Singapore) and Cynthia (b. Tokyo) and two grandchildren Blake and Evan Maki. After being married in Japan on February 14, 1974, she lived in Tokyo, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Chicago and Tokyo. In the late 1980s, she returned to school graduating from the University of Illinois and becoming a C.P.A. Returning to Japan, she worked for Moodys and then as C.F.O for AXA Japan. Moving to Scituate in 2005, she was active in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, enjoyed playing mahjong with her friends, had begun watercolor painting lessons, was an excellent competitive bridge player and volunteered at a local hospice.

A service in celebration of her life will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Scituate, Friday September 21st, at 11 a.m. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology at https://webapp.asco.org/foundation/Donate.aspx.  Gifts may be directed toward "cancer research" and in memory of "Makiko Hardy."  Friends are also asked to check the "I would like to notify someone about my donation" box and notify "Douglas Hardy."
