Malcolm T. Logan, of Portland, Maine, died suddenly on March 8, 2012, of an apparent heart attack.  He was 56.

Logan was the only son of Paula E. (Polly) Logan and the late General Edward F. Logan of Cohasset, MA.  He also leaves his sister, Martha A. Logan and her husband, Professor Patrick Reid of Bloomfield, NJ, and his cousin Roberta Phippen Collier and her husband, Jeb Collier, of New Bern, NC.

Malcolm was a Partner at Nelson Rarities, Inc., a renowned buyer and seller of antique and estate jewelry for over 30 years, in Portland, Maine.  As a Fine Arts major at Harvard University, owner Andrew Nelson recruited fellow classmate Malcolm for his love and appreciation of rare gems and fine jewelry.  He established strong bonds with clients throughout the world and made lasting friendships from Europe to Florida, Las Vegas to Hong Kong, New England to London.  His pride was the Nelson Rarities catalogue, published annually and a work of art in itself, which shared the rare gems and fine jewelry found throughout the world with similar collectors and admirers.  According to Mr. Nelson, the firm's striking and informative website was entirely Malcolm's vision.

An avid reader, Malcolm's interests included mysteries, music, history, and sports.  He loved intellectual games, whether the NY Times crossword puzzle, "Name that Tune in Three Notes", or a challenging rubber of duplicate bridge.  A former ball player himself, his favorite team of all was the Boston Red Sox, with many evenings spent at Fenway Park or tuned in to WEEI.

From his days at Milton Academy and Harvard University and throughout his life, Malcolm will be remembered as an individualist, always with a smile and positive attitude, generous and loyal to a fault, and typically attired in white bucks, a colorful tie, blue or white blazer, and Panama hat.

Surviving family includes Barbara and Philip Cutler of Seattle, WA, Walter and Martha Phippen of Hull, MA, Susan and Sandy Buxbaum of Towson, MD, David and Wendy Phippen of Bothell, WA, Pat and Mike Rissler of Lenexa, KS, and Fred and Kelly Peterson of Fort Worth, TX.

The wake will be held Friday, March 16, 2012 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at McNamara Sparrell Funeral Home located at 1 Summer Street in Cohasset, MA, and the funeral service will be held Saturday, March 17th, 2012 at 11:30 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 10 Summer Street, Cohasset MA.  A reception will be held immediately following the service at the South Shore Art Center, 119 Ripley Road, Cohasset, MA.
