Marie C. Price
5/14/1935 - 11/22/2024
With family by her side, Marie C. Price passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth following a brief illness. She was 89 years old.
Born in New York, Marie grew up an only child in the Far Rockaway section of Queens where she developed a lifelong love of the ocean and became an avid swimmer and self-proclaimed "beach bum." Throughout her teen years, she served as a day camp counselor at the city's various parks and thanks to this experience, she quickly discovered how much she enjoyed working with children. With a keen interest in pursuing a teaching career, she graduated from Fordham University in 1957 with a degree in education.
It was also at Fordham where she met the love of her life, another native New Yorker by the name of Eugene K. Price. Married for 58 years before Gene's passing in 2017, they were each other's soul mate, best friend, and true love. Marie and Gene shared a loving marriage and pursued many interests and adventures together including extensive travel throughout the U.S. and around the world with their favorite destinations being Ireland, Egypt, and of course, New York City.
Marie relished working with young children, and for nearly four decades, she devoted herself to elementary education. Her early years were spent teaching in Queens, and soon after moving to Cohasset, MA in 1971, she made her mark as a beloved Kindergarten teacher at the Joseph Osgood School. Every September, "Mrs. Price" happily greeted her new class with open arms, and through a variety of means including music, art, and storytelling, she consistently found new and creative ways to make learning fun. Moreover, she patiently took the time to know and genuinely appreciate her young pupils, and she always discovered a way to shine a spotlight on each and every one of them and their special gifts.
Despite not ever being able to shake her New York accent, Marie was incredibly proud to call Cohasset home for over 40 years. If she wasn't cruising to Sandy Beach in her red Ford Fairlane convertible, she could be found at "The Osgood" getting her classroom ready for the next big event, or leading fundraising efforts for the Cohasset Swim Team, or teaching CCD, or coordinating community bike trips to Cape Cod. She was a parishioner and active participant at St. Anthony's Church, a testament to her deep and abiding Catholic faith.
In recent years, Marie made her home at The Atrium in Palm Beach Shores, Florida where she and Gene formed many terrific friendships. She later resided at Chatsworth Assisted Living in Palm Beach Gardens and created a multitude of special memories with their wonderful staff and all of her fellow residents. Just last March, she returned to Massachusetts and lived at BayPath Nursing in Duxbury. Over her nine months back on the South Shore, she enjoyed being able to reconnect with good friends and spend so much more quality time with her family.
Marie is survived by her sons and their wives: E.T. (Kristen) and J.T. (Wendy), and her five wonderful grandchildren: Jennifer (Jason) Chamberlain, Alex (Josie), Kenny (Sam Crowley), Harry (Grayson Mills) and Maggie. She also leaves behind three adoring great-grandchildren: Johnny and Zoe Chamberlain, and Calvin Price. Absolutely nothing in this world made Marie happier and prouder than her family, and nothing was more important to her than being the best possible Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma. Kindhearted and a true natural in those roles, she imparted many regular lessons and examples of what it meant to take initiative, to be responsible, to have manners, to show gratitude, to be a good person, and to always have a sense of humor.
Gregarious, inquisitive, and always curious about people and their story, Marie had a genuine knack for making new friends. Given a choice between sitting in an empty row at the movies and a row full of people quietly minding their own business, she'd always choose to sit with the crowd and strike up a lively conversation. Many laughs would inevitably follow, and it wouldn't be unusual for everyone to end up exchanging phone numbers… all before the movie even started!
In every facet of her life, Marie was an ever present and multi-talented force of nature who never shied away from turning any situation into a fun and memorable adventure. She will be dearly missed, but along with Gene, she will forever remain at the heart of our most cherished memories.
