Mark Smith, age 68, of Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2026.
Mark was born on February 22, 1958 to Gloria and James Smith. As a lifelong resident of Norwell, Massachusetts, he proudly devoted 38 years of his life to working as the foreman of the Norwell Trees and Grounds Department. Smith was responsible for mowing the town’s grounds, trimming and cutting down trees, and sanding and plowing the roads. He was no stranger to overtime, sparing no effort when it came to tackling snowstorms in the winding backroads of Norwell. Even after retirement, Mark would return to the shop to teach the next generation of workers the ins and outs of pesticides to ensure the town would be in good hands.
A major pillar of Mark’s life was the union and labor movement. He joined the Boston Labor Guild in 1999 where he would attend as many (if not all) classes offered. Mark’s diligent studies led him to become a walking encyclopedia of worker’s rights. He used everything he learned to be a better representative of his coworkers for rights they deserved in the workplace. Mark also brought his knowledge with him as he took to the road, traveling all across the country to conventions as a board member of AFSCME Local 1700. He also served as the president of both the Southeastern Massachusetts Tree Warden and Arborists’ Association and the Labor Guild. Even after retirement, Mark served as the treasurer of the Union and attended meetings. He took great pride in his organization and record keeping, something that will be missed by many.
Mark will be remembered as a loyal friend and a hardworking man. He gave 110% to everything he did, be it large or small. Mark can best be described as a jack-of-all-trades, excelling at handiwork such as electrical wiring, woodwork, welding, landscaping, and car repairs. He always enjoyed helping his only child, Rory, with their school projects throughout the years.
Mark was a loving and devoted father who was present at every event in his kid’s life, regardless of the size or significance. He would speed out of work to attend band concerts, musicals, and sports games and practices. On weekends, Mark would take Rory on long bike rides at Wompatuck State Park in Hingham or catch a movie at the local theater, followed by a pizza at Bertucci’s. He always ensured to spend the holidays with Rory and their mother, Patricia Smith of Halifax.
In his retirement, Mark spent time doing the things he loved to do such as cooking, reading, and taking long walks. He was always an avid reader and enjoyed biographic and history books. He enjoyed laying out in the sun on the beaches of Florida and tuning in to outdoor concerts. Mark was always gregarious and outgoing, driving all across MA to keep up with his friends.
Mark was truly a one-of-a-kind soul who will be missed by everyone who knew him. Mark was preceded in death by his mother (Gloria), father (James), and two brothers (Scott and Dean). He is survived by his child, Rory, and their partner, Ruby of New Jersey; former spouse and Rory’s mother, Patricia Smith; and his loving partner, Laureen Lappe, and her family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 10th at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, located at 30 Central Street, Norwell, MA 02061. The burial will be private. Additionally, a Memorial Mass in remembrance of Mark will take place on Sunday April 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the Pastoral Center in Braintree.
