Obituary

Mary King Hanna, age 86,  of Scituate passed away peacefully on June 27,2023 , just days after her 50th wedding anniversary to her husband and best friend James "Jim" L Hanna . Mary was born in Dorchester on December 26, 1936 to  the late William and Grace (Meenan) King.   She attended St Peter's Elementary school then Holy Cross Academy High School.  She graduated from Emmanuel College in 1958 with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics. She initially worked in computers at Sylvania until she was  married and became a devoted mother to her three daughters.

She later started a new career in teaching and received her master's in Education at Boston State College . She began her teaching career in Boston but then enjoyed a long successful career in Quincy teaching math , most of her years at North Quincy High School. She was a dedicated teacher and touched many students lives as well as forming long lasting friendships with her fellow teachers. After her retirement in 2001, she  worked as a retirement consultant for the Massachusetts Teacher's Association .

Mary moved from Dorchester to Scituate in 1973 after her marriage to Jim and enjoyed gardening, sailing  and  going to  the beach, while raising their children and grandchildren. She and Jim loved having their children and grandchildren  at their cottage in Dennisport , MA  and had many fond family  memories at Martha's Vineyard and Fort Meyers Beach. Once she retired , they enjoyed spending  winters in Fort Meyers and Naples, Florida. She enjoyed traveling to various  sunny beaches as well as adventures across the US, and trips to Europe and Italy . A devote Catholic, she was an active member of St Francis Cabrini Church in Scituate and then St Anthony's in Cohasset. She enjoyed time with her fellow Emmanuel alumni attending reunions and  alumni events.

In addition to her loving husband Jim, she leaves behind her 3 daughters, Janemarie Niven Dolan and  husband Robert of Scituate  , Judy (Niven) O'Flynn and  husband Mark of Ipswich  and Mary Beth Niven  and husband Mark Chocko of Lakeville PA  as well as   nine grandchildren, Caitlin , Colin, Mark,  Natalie , Alexander, Daniel, Melinda, , Benjamin and Kathryn . She is predeceased by her brother William King, and 2 sisters, Dorothy Parker and Phyllis King. She also leaves behind her 5 stepchildren, James Michael( deceased) ,William and his wife Karen, Mark, John and Barbara as well as four step grandchildren. She leaves behind her sister-in-law Phyllis King and Diane Hanna as well her cousins, Joseph, Alleyne and Ann Marie and her nieces , nephews and friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, July 7, 2023 from 4-7pm at the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home-1 Summer Street, Cohasset. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 10am at St. Anthony's Church, Cohasset, MA. Interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Scituate, MA.
