Obituary

Mary Judith (Murchison) McHugh of North Scituate, Massachusetts, passed away in her sleep on October 24, 2021 at the age of 84. Mrs. McHugh was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Lynn, Massachusetts, and Trinity College in Washington, D.C.. She worked briefly in sales at John Hancock before leaving to raise her family in North Scituate (Minot), Massachusetts. Mrs. McHugh pursued further studies as her children got older, including Education at Emmanuel College in Boston, Literature at Harvard University's Extension School in Cambridge, and Irish language classes in South Boston. Mrs. McHugh began teaching English at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, Massachusetts, in 1984, eventually becoming the department chair.

Mrs. McHugh was very active in serving others. She was a Brownie, Girl Scout and Cub Scout troop/den leader for each of her four children, a catechism teacher, a volunteer tutor for many years at the Nativity Preparatory School in Jamaica Plain (Boston), a supporter of local families through Catholic Charities, a volunteer class leader for school groups at the New England Aquarium in Boston, a Dame of Malta, and a lector and active committee member at Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham, Massachusetts. Informally, she helped nieces, nephews, friends' children and neighbors as a volunteer tutor, academic advisor and occasionally advocate. Mrs. McHugh also volunteered regularly in her grandchildren's nursery school classes in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Mrs. McHugh leaves her children, Mary McKelvey and her husband James of Cohasset, Massachusetts, Alexandra McHugh of Canton, Connecticut, Edward lll and his wife Trina of Simsbury, Connecticut, and Michael A. of Milton, Massachusetts, nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years Edward F. McHugh, Jr., her grandson Michael C. McHugh of Milton, Massachusetts, and her sister Karen A. (Murchison) Richards of Lynn, Massachusetts.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Glastonbury Abbey, in Hingham, Massachusetts, on Friday, October 29 at 10:00 am, followed by interment of her ashes with her husband's on the Abbey grounds. Please note that Glastonbury requires masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status.  Visiting hours omitted.
