IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Ellen
(O'Keeffe) Riddell
August 1, 1938 – December 24, 2025
Mary Ellen Riddell (née O'Keeffe), age 87, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, in Quincy, Massachusetts. Born on August 1, 1938, in Norwalk, Connecticut, Mary grew up in Ridgefield, CT, relocating with her family to Scituate, MA in 1982.
Mary lived a life rich with curiosity, compassion and adventure. She was the beloved wife of Brian Riddell, who predeceased her in 2003. Together they shared a life filled with deep family connections and a sense for exploration. Their years living abroad in Prague were among their most cherished, as they traveled extensively throughout Europe and embraced new cultures and experiences with open hearts.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Mary leaves behind her children and their families: Chris Riddell and his wife Marie, along with their children Jack and Holly of Hopedale, MA; Tracy Riddell Phelan and her husband Jim, with their children Kelly and Ryan of Quincy, MA; and Karen Riddell Bisol and her husband Adam, with their son Sam of Scituate, MA. Her love for her family was unwavering—she never missed a birthday or milestone occasion.
Mary's early passions were as vibrant as the life she led. In her youth, she had a keen eye for fashion and often sewed clothes for herself and others. She delighted in crafts and horseback riding and had a particular fondness for her Austin Healy Sprite—a symbol of her spirited independence. Music was another lifelong joy; from playing the clarinet to attending symphonies or simply listening at home, she found comfort and inspiration in its many forms. Mary loved animals, dogs in particular, and thought of the many dogs she had throughout her life as family.
Her love of travel took her across the United States and Southeast Asia. Whether exploring distant lands or engaging in thoughtful conversation at home, Mary brought insight and warmth to every interaction. She was an avid reader with a prodigious memory—an incredible historian who could speak articulately on a wide range of topics. Her empathetic ear made her a treasured confidante to many, while her razor-sharp wit left lasting impressions.
A woman of deep faith, Mary was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. She faithfully attended Mass on Sundays and religious holidays and held a special affection for midnight Mass on Christmas Eve—a tradition that reflected both her spiritual devotion and love for meaningful celebration.
Mary Ellen Riddell's legacy is one of intellect, grace, humor, and heartfelt connection. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire all whose lives she touched.
