Mary E. (Provan) Kirkland, 94, passed away peacefully on March 14 surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of the late Robert Kirkland, Jr. for 36 years.
Born in Bearsden, Scotland to Elizabeth and James Provan, Mary emigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 3. She grew up In Quincy, graduated from Quincy High School in 1939 and worked at the Christian Science Publishing House in Boston until her marriage. Mary and "Bob" lived in Weymouth for many happy years raising their four children before moving to Marshfield Hills where she was an active member of the North River Arts Society and a volunteer at the South Shore Natural Science Center and the Clift Rogers Library.
Mary was a resident of Plymouth for the past 31 years and had been a devoted member of the Women's Alliance of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. Her greatest pleasures were spending time with her family, playing a friendly game of cards, and sitting on her porch quietly appreciating the beauty of nature in her yard. She also enjoyed baking, delighting family and friends with batches of her "famous" lemon squares.
Mary is survived by her four loving children, Robert Kirkland III and his wife Diane of Marshfield Hills, Margaret Johnson and her husband Alan of Norwell, Dr. James Kirkland and his wife Susan of Magna, UT, and Mary "Libby" Sachs and her husband, Jerel of Halifax.
She will be greatly missed by her cherished grandchildren, John Gaynor of Cave Creek, AZ, Kim Sylvester of Pembroke, Robert Kirkland of Plympton, Rebecca O'Donnell of Venice, FL, Jason Sachs of Sydney, Australia, David Sachs of Reston, VA, Kelsey Watts-Klein of West Jordan, UT and Darcy Kirkland of Magna, UT. She also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren, as well as a great-great grandson, 2 year old "A.J." who has brought her so much joy in her final years.
In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Ian Provan and Alfred Provan, and her sister, Margaret Cedarstrom.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
