IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael
Lombardy
July 21, 2024
Michael "Mike" Lombardy, longtime resident of Cohasset, MA, most recently a resident of Marshfield, MA, passed away peacefully in his sleep, on July 21st, 2024. The most devoted and beloved husband to Barbara Ann Lombardy, and the most fun, loving, fearless, loyal and dedicated father to Brooke Conlin Lombardy and Matthew Hughes Lombardy. Adoring and loving father-in-law to Jon Pall Olafsson. Beloved son to Frank and Lannah Lombardy, their great love of the ocean stayed with him always. Exceptionally proudest of all the grandfathers ever, to his sweet granddaughters Annika and Elin Jonsdottir. Friends to so many who remember his contagious laugh, brilliant mind, and unmatched integrity.
Mike graduated from the University of Maryland in 1966 with a BA in Accounting, and then proudly served stateside during the Vietnam War from 1966-1972. He received a job as an auditor with Price Waterhouse, and he had the choice to move from Maryland with Barbara to San Francisco, CA or the Boston, MA area. Mike and Barbara chose MA, to be close to one other couple they were friends with and to start their lives. They lived in Wellesley, MA in an apartment that they tirelessly re-wallpapered, tidied up and fixed in exchange for a break on the rent. Mike would always describe these years as when he was the most handy at home upkeep, a title that would fall to the wayside as his love of sailing picked up a few years later. Mike and Barbara found their forever town in the gorgeous seaside community of Cohasset, first living on Hillside Drive, and then moving to their much-beloved home of 40+ years on Windy Hill Road.
Mike's integrity and confidence in his abilities to succeed and make a mark in the business world were unmatched. After leaving Price Waterhouse, Mike worked for State Street Research in Boston as their chief accounting officer. Mike established himself as a leader within the corporate executive team and he was promised the role of partner as SSR was purchased by MetLife. However, when the acquisition went through, Mike was told that they would not be promoting him to partner. Mike stood in the SSR/MetLife offices of downtown Boston and with no plan in place, told the CEO exactly where he could go, and what he should do! Integrity and being true to one's word were the most important things to Mike. He drove back down the 30 miles of 93S to Cohasset without a plan but knew he would show everyone what he was capable of. And did he ever!
Mike started his own company, Lombardy & Associates, which for 30 years provided consulting services to the mutual fund industry. Mike's successful business venture provided a life of comfort, stability and fun for their family. Mike and Barbara would travel yearly to Palm Springs, CA to La Quinta, and while Mike was a terrible golfer, they loved staying right on the courses--even when Mike shot a ball directly into a plate of chicken salad on a particularly tricky par 5.
Mike was a committed sailor, taking naturally to the ocean as his father was a merchant marine and loved being on the water. Windsong and Capricious were the first boats, but Mike wanted to go bigger, then came the first of three Barbara Ann sailboats, as the deal was struck that Mike could have his boats, but they better be named after Barbara Ann.
Mike and Barbara loved being with their children and had a blast at their colleges; Matthew at St. Anselm's for his rowing and all the fun that NH would provide, like the annual pumpkin boat river race. When Brooke was at Connecticut College, Mike and Barbara went ALL IN cheering on Brooke and her teammates on the Connecticut College volleyball team, to the point where Mike's excited yells to the referee during a match even earned the CCVB team a yellow card.
Mike had the most magnificent laugh and a truly magical personality. He told the best bedtime stories, often pulling inspiration from his father Frank's travels throughout the world. He could inspire others to be like him and to take leaps of faith, and he was always the biggest cheerleader. When you spoke to him, everyone else dropped away, and he made you feel as if you were the only person in the room, and that you were the most important person ever created.
Mike's ultimate devotion was to his love of 63 years, Barbara Ann. As Mike suffered through Alzheimer's, his love and devotion to his Babs remained a constant. Even later in his days, they held hands constantly, they created their new love language as his verbal skills diminished, and they remained each other's constants. May everyone be so lucky as to experience a love like Barbara and Mike Lombardy.
Mike's wishes were to be sent out to sea, to be in his favorite place, the ocean. There will be a private celebration of life honoring Mike and his legacy.
