Muriel A. Sweeney, 81, of Norwell, MA, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, in the care of her family after a long illness.
Born in Grand Island, Nebraska, on April 21, 1944, she was the first of four children of the late James Trainor and Mary (Morgan) Trainor. Shortly after her birth, she moved to East Boston, where she spent her formative years and graduated from East Boston High School in 1962. She cherished spending summers at her family’s home in Waldoboro, Maine.
Muriel had a 40-year career in the consumer finance industry, working as a mortgage underwriter prior to her retirement. After retiring, she spent several years caring for children in Norwell. Muriel enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, and was happiest by the ocean, spending many summers in Brant Rock, Marshfield. Her family will always remember her deep love of dogs and her devoted care of her cavachon, Holly.
Muriel was the beloved wife of James Sweeney, whom she married in 1997. She is survived by her sister and best friend, Lorraine (Mohammad) Moradi, and her brother, Richard Trainor. From her previous marriage to the late Charles Loring, she is survived by her son, Eric Loring and his wife Susan of Whitman, and her daughter, Cheryl Tobin and her husband Michael of Norwell. She made her home in Brockton, where she raised her children until they graduated from high school and went on to college.
Muriel considered her grandchildren—Christopher, Brooke, and Halle Loring, and Michaela, Luke, and Benjamin Tobin—to be her greatest treasure. She was their number one fan and biggest supporter in all their endeavors. They all have fond memories of holidays at Nana’s, filled with extravagant decorations and a delicious spread of all their favorites.
Aunt & grandaunt to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Predeceased by a brother Thomas Trainor.
