Olga Zugates Emmel, age 89, of Norwell, MA, departed life triumphant and smiling, surrounded by family on January 24th, 2012. Olga was born one of ten siblings to Croatian immigrants, Frank and Rose Zugates in Becarria, PA, weathered the depression years, and found her way to New York City for training and practice as a radiology technician. She married Robert C. Emmel, MD in 1947 and, soon thereafter, moved to West Hartford, CT to raise four children before settling for the remainder of her life in Norwell, MA.
Olga loved fresh air and the outdoors and took regular doses: skating, skiing, walking and sleeping with the window wide open, even in the middle of winter! Her heart was just as open to equality and justice, and if you asked she let you know. Sometimes she let you know even when you did not ask. She was an inspiring gardener—founding the victory garden at her last home in Norwell Gardens. She was a trusted wife, loving mother, reliable friend, and kind "Nanny" to all who shared their lives with her.
She leaves behind her four children and their families: Barbara Wolinsky, her husband Cary and son Yari of Norwell, MA; David Emmel and his son Matthew of Avon, CT, Fred Emmel, his wife Shelley of Dayton, OH and daughter Jenai of Boston, MA; and Richard Emmel, his wife Martha and son Dylan of Stoneham, MA.
Special thanks to the devoted staff of Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center who found a way to make graceful the last stages of life, and to Lois Ricci who was simply an angel. A celebration of life for friends and family will be held on July 28 from 4-7p.m. at the home of Barbara and Cary Wolinsky, 70 Green Street, Norwell, MA. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders:
