Philip "Phil" Joseph, age 81, of Norwell, MA, passed away Friday, September 27 th at his home, surrounded by loved ones, after a battle with cancer.  He was born in Norwell on September 16, 1932, son of the late Herbert E. and Grace C. (Ward) Joseph.

Phil was the beloved husband for 55 years of Elizabeth J. (Ballantine) Joseph.  He is survived by his five daughters Kathleen M. Joseph (Roger Anderson, PhD) of South Weymouth, Karen A. Joseph (Robert Pashkowsky) of Norwell, Maureen J. Joseph, PhD (John J. Harland, PhD) of Hockessin, DE, Carolyn J. Fredrickson (Alan Fredrickson) of Wolfeboro, NH, and Laura A. Joseph-Dwyer (Paul Dwyer) of Scituate. Cherished Grandpa of Nicole Vivino, Erik and Anna Frederickson, Ian and Carly Harland, Matthew Pashkowsky, and Olivia and Grace Dwyer.  He was the brother of George Joseph, Jean McKenney, June Aldrich, Joyce Dennis, and the late Leo, Arthur, and E. Arnold Joseph.  He is survived by numerous brother and sister-in-laws, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a longtime friend and Norwell neighbor to many; particularly Ray Dwyer and the late Robert Coyle.

A lifetime resident of Norwell, Phil was the co-owner of Joseph's Garage, a family business started in 1928.  He will be remembered by many for his smile and wave from the pumps.  Phil drove the bus for town sponsored activities and athletics.  Phil served the town of Norwell for many years on various elected and appointed boards, including the Planning Board and the Groundwater Study Committee.  He also served the town as an auxiliary policeman and paramedic.  Phil was affectionately known as the unofficial mayor of Norwell and was citizen of the year in 1990. Phil was a veteran of the Korean Conflict; serving in both the Navy and Marines.  He was a member of American Legion Post 192.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 3 rd , 2013 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St. Scituate Harbor. Visiting hours Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 4-8pm in McNamara-Sparell Funeral Home, 30 Central St. (off Rt. 123, near State Police Barrack), Norwell Center. Interment Washington Street Cemetery, Norwell. In lieu of flowers, donations in Phil's memory may be made to the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.
