Obituary

Pieter Rowe Mimno, of North Marshfield, passed away at age 84 at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham on December 19, 2020 after a long series of illnesses. He was the son of the late Harry and Katerina Mimno of Lexington.

Pieter earned his B.S. in Physics in 1958 and his M.S. in Aero and Astro Engineering in 1960 at MIT. After graduation, Pieter took his younger brother on an adventurous 6 month trip, driving in a VW camper from Germany to India via Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

When he returned, Peiter began another adventure, a 14 year career working on the  guidance systems of the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs at MIT's Charles Stark Draper Laboratory. Most memorable was the Lab's round-the-clock effort to bring Apollo 13 safely back to the earth. Later he focused on high-end computer technology, consulting and giving seminars world-wide.

A sailor since childhood, Pieter truly loved "messing about in boats". He competed on Internationals and sailed in 11 Newport-to-Bermuda races. With his wife Susan, he shared sailing experiences aboard their beloved Concordia yawl, Whimbnel, for over 40 years.

In addition to Susan, Pieter leaves behind his sister Erika Brigham of Apalachicula, FL and brother Gerald Mimno of Lexington, as well as niece Hillary Brigham of Tallahassee, FL, niece Katharine Mimno of Boston, nephew David Mimno of Ithaca, NY, three great-nephews and 2 great-nieces.

Contributions in Pieter's memory may be made to the Maine Coast Heritage Trust at mcht.org.
