Ralph Dearing Gordon

Ralph Dearing Gordon, of Norwell, MA, died unexpectedly on October 26 at age 86. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betsy Wunsch Gordon, from Grosse Pointe, Michigan; along with three sons, Douglas, David and Alexander; two sisters, Susan Norris Welch and Jane Norris Flint; and four grandchildren, James (19), Samuel (16), Grace (10), and Abby (7).

Ralph was born in 1940 at home in Braintree, MA. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he was president of his fraternity, Sigma Chi. After graduation, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, where he was trained as a navigator. He served in the Air Force for four years, including deployments in Vietnam and work as a courier.

After his discharge from the Air Force, Ralph returned to Massachusetts to earn a master’s degree in history from Northeastern University, where he met his future wife, Betsy. Ralph and Betsy were married in 1969, living in Boston for two years until they moved to Norwell in 1971, where they raised their family and became active in local organizations.

After graduating from Northeastern, Ralph joined the Boston-based bank that became Bank of New England, starting his career in human resources. After serving in a wide range of management roles, Ralph retired from Bank of New England at 55 as vice chairman. He then served as chief operating officer of Emmanuel College, taught at Boston University, and advised companies and governments for the consulting firm Arthur D. Little.

In full retirement, he shifted his focus to the Norwell community, serving three terms on the town Advisory Board, chairing the Norwell school building committee, serving on the Norwell VNA finance committee, co-leading a restoration of the Roche Hospice home in Hingham, and serving as treasurer of the South Shore Natural Science Center. Ralph also served as treasurer of the historic preservation-focused Bostonian Society.

Conservation was particularly important to Ralph, and he and Betsy donated land to the Trustees of Reservations that became the Gordon Pond Trail at the Norris Reservation in Norwell. They also served as planned giving co-chairs and life trustees of the Trustees of Reservations.

In his personal life, Ralph was a passionate sailor, sailing with family and friends in his boat Joshua Brown across coastal Massachusetts. He had a special fondness for walking and jogging through the Norris Reservation and boating and swimming in the North River. In the winter, he was an enthusiastic Nordic skier, enjoying trails across Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He also enjoyed time with his sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, whom he visited regularly. In 2024, Ralph and Betsy moved from Norwell to the Village at Duxbury.

The memorial service for Ralph will be held at First Parish Norwell Unitarian Church, 24 River St. Norwell, MA on Saturday November 7 at 10:30 am, with a reception to follow the service in the Parish Hall.
