Java Sargent

Java Sargent, a lifelong resident of Cohasset and proud Beechwooder, passed away leaving behind a legacy of laughter, friendship, and love. To many, he was simply a legend. To others, he was “the man.” To countless nieces, nephews, family friends, and neighborhood kids, he was everyone’s favorite uncle.

Java shared 44 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Cheryl (Bongarzone) Sargent. Together they built a life filled with love, family, and unforgettable memories. He was the proud father of Stephanie Sargent, Jesse Sargent and Samantha Sargent, and the devoted grandfather of Brenna Kane, Mason Delaney, and Brooklyn Kane, who were among the greatest joys of his life.

He is also survived by his siblings, Billy Sargent and Side-kick Sister Sharon Sargent. He was predeceased by his brothers Dennis Sargent and Bobby Sargent. Java was the beloved son of the late Richard and Patricia Sargent, both of Cohasset.

Born and raised in Cohasset, Java was a true Beechwooder through and through. He knew everyone, and it seemed everyone knew him. He had a gift for making people feel like family and never met a stranger. His circle of friends was endless, and he often joked that if he ever needed anything, all it would take was one phone call. Those who knew him knew it wasn’t really a joke, because it was true.

He was always the first person to offer a helping hand. He was generous, loyal, and caring, and he would drop what he was doing to help someone in need.

Java loved music of every kind. Whether it was country, rock, or rap, every car ride turned into a full concert performance. If you rode with him, you got the complete show; singing, dancing, and all. His love for music was contagious, just like his laughter.

He loved fishing and looked forward to summer fishing adventures with his lifelong friend, Tom Jones of Cohasset. He also cherished summers spent camping with his family, creating memories around campfires, sharing stories, and enjoying the simple moments that became lifelong treasures.

Java had an incredible sense of humor and loved a good joke. His laugh was unforgettable, and he made it his mission to make those around him laugh right along with him. Whether he was telling stories, cracking jokes, or simply enjoying time with family and friends, he brought joy wherever he went.

He believed in enjoying life and appreciated the things that brought people together: good friends, good music, good times, and yes, a little smoke now and then. It was all part of Java being Java: living life on his own terms, finding joy in every day, and making sure everyone around him was having a good time too.

Above all else, Java loved his family and friends. The stories, laughter, lessons, and memories he leaves behind will continue to live on through all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A legend never truly leaves us. Java’s spirit will live on in every fishing trip, every campfire, every song played too loud, every shared laugh, and every story told about “the man” who made life a little brighter for everyone around him.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Java’s life and share memories with those who loved him. Visiting hours will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, June 13, at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home in Cohasset.
