Richard Gilson "Dick" Scheide of Nantucket died February 18, 2013 in Norwell, MA after a long illness. He was 83. Dick graduated from Westminster School in Simsbury, CT and the University of Virginia. He was commissioned upon graduation as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, where he served in Japan and Korea. He separated from the Corps with the rank of Captain. He was involved in many educational organizations, primarily as a Trustee, including: Wheaton College in Norton, MA; the American College of Greece in Athens, Greece; Westminster School and Watkins School, both in CT. Some other activities included: Board Member of the Friends of the Public Garden in Boston; The Dover Church in Dover, MA; The Dedham Country and Polo Club in Dedham, MA; and numerous other organizations and charities. An avid outdoorsman, Dick enjoyed many activities including hunting, fishing, boating, horseback riding, dog showing, and camping. His dogs meant the world to him and he instilled his love for the outdoors and animals in his children, who continue to enjoy many of the things he exposed them to as children.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine "Gerry" (Pierre) Scheide and his sons William of York, PA; Robert and his wife, Sarah of Nantucket, MA; and daughter, Susan of Canton, MA. He leaves three grandsons, Philip, Charlie, and Sam .He is predeceased by his parents, Philip and Virginia Scheide, his stepmother, Elizabeth Harris Scheide as well as his brothers, Philip and Jack Scheide. He also leaves several nephews and nieces.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013 at 11:30 am in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, CT. Those wishing to do so may make a gift in his name to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
